System design mock interview
A system design round has no single correct answer, which is why people who can code well still struggle in it. The interviewer is watching how you structure an open problem, how you make trade-offs and whether you can defend them.
What is a system design mock interview?
A system design mock interview is a practice round where you design a large system, such as a rate limiter or a feed, from vague requirements. You clarify scope, estimate load, sketch the components and data, and defend trade-offs while the interviewer probes the weakest part.

The shape of a good answer
Start by narrowing the problem: who uses it, what must it do, and what can wait. Then size it with rough numbers for requests, storage and growth, because the numbers decide whether you need one database or many.
Next sketch the interface (the main calls and what they return), the data you store and how it is keyed, and the path of one request through the components. Only then go deep on the parts that are hard for this problem: ordering, consistency, hot keys, failure.
Where the interviewer pushes
Expect to be asked what happens when a component fails, what limits you at ten times the load, and why you chose one store or one approach over another. Strong candidates name the trade-off (consistency against availability, latency against cost) instead of defending a favourite tool.
Common topics include caches and invalidation, queues and delivery guarantees, sharding and replication, rate limiting, search and feeds, and idempotency for payments and retries.
How it works on giveinterview
Role interviews on the platform can include a 45-minute system design round after the voice screen and the coding round, run by voice with a whiteboard you can draw on while you talk. The interviewer reads your diagram and asks about it, and the report scores how you structured the problem and handled the follow-ups. Your first 3 single-question interviews are free for life, every interview report is free, and a new account also gets 6 welcome credits.
Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare for a system design interview?
Practise a handful of classic designs end to end and out loud, learn the building blocks (cache, queue, database choices, load balancing) and their trade-offs, and practise estimating numbers quickly.
Do junior candidates get system design questions?
Sometimes a lighter version, such as designing a small service or a data model. Senior roles expect a full design with scaling and failure handling.
Is there a whiteboard?
Yes. System design rounds on the platform include a whiteboard that the interviewer can see.
