Voice screen mock interview: your background, projects and motivation

The first round of many loops is a short conversation, not a coding test. It decides whether you get to the technical rounds, and it is the one most people rehearse least because there is nothing to code.

What is a voice screen interview?

A voice screen is a short first-round conversation, often ten minutes, where an interviewer asks about your background, projects and why you want the role. It checks communication and fit before the technical rounds. On giveinterview an AI interviewer runs it by voice and scores it.

What the interviewer listens for

A clear, short introduction; specific projects described by what you did, why and what happened; honest answers about what you do not know; and a reason for wanting this role that goes beyond the company name. Vague claims invite a follow-up that exposes them.

A useful structure for any story is situation, what you did, result, and what you would change. Practise telling two or three of your projects that way in under two minutes each.

Follow-ups are the test

Interviewers go one level deeper than your first answer: why that design, what broke, what you would do differently, what you personally wrote. If you uploaded your resume, the questions come from it, so know every line on it.

How it works here

Gate 0 of a role loop on giveinterview is a 10-minute voice screen. You talk with the interviewer, and the report scores clarity, depth and how you handled follow-ups. Your first interview is free. Your first 3 single-question interviews are free for life, every interview report is free, and a new account also gets 6 welcome credits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare for the first-round screening call?

Prepare a 60-second introduction, two or three project stories with specifics, and a clear reason for the role. Then practise out loud, because answers that read well on paper often ramble when spoken.

Does it ask coding questions?

The voice screen is a conversation. Coding comes in the later rounds of the loop.

Do I have to upload a resume?

On practice roles you can continue without one, and the interviewer asks about your background instead. With a resume the questions are about your projects.
