AI interview: what it is and how to prepare for one

An AI interview is a screening or practice interview where the interviewer is software. It asks questions, listens to answers, follows up and scores the result. More companies use them to screen applicants, and more candidates use them to prepare.

How an AI interview works

You join a session and the interviewer, usually by voice, asks you a question. A speech model turns your answer into text, a language model decides what to ask next, and a scoring step grades the whole conversation against the role. For coding roles you also write code in a live editor that the interviewer can read.

What it scores

Good AI interviews score reasoning as well as the final answer: did you clarify the problem, pick a sensible approach, state complexity, handle edge cases and explain your code. On giveinterview the report breaks the result down by stage so you can see where to improve.

How to prepare

Practise out loud. Explain your approach before you code, state time and space complexity, and test your code against an edge case without being asked. Do a few timed sessions at a harder level than you expect. The fastest way to prepare is to take the same kind of interview first. Your first 3 single-question interviews are free for life, every interview report is free, and a new account also gets 6 welcome credits.

For companies

Companies publish a role with an AI interview loop and pay per candidate who starts it: 6 credits for the voice screen and 4 for each later round. Every applicant gets the same interview, and the hiring team sees a ranked board with transcripts and scorecards. New company accounts start with 150 free credits.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI interview?

An interview where an AI plays the interviewer: it asks questions, listens, asks follow-ups and scores the answers. Companies use it to screen applicants and candidates use it to practise.

Can an AI interview replace a human one?

It replaces the first screening round well because every candidate gets the same questions and a scored transcript. Final decisions still belong to people.

How do I prepare for an AI interview?

Practise out loud, explain your approach before coding, state complexity and test edge cases. Take a practice interview of the same kind first; the first 3 single-question ones on giveinterview are free.
